Replace an NXT-MSC Controller

Replace an NXT-MSC Controller

1.0 Introduction

The following steps explains the correct method for replacing an NXT-MSC controller. Following these steps exactly ensures that the controllers, reader and access rights settings are retained and will not need to be reprogrammed.

Note: Before performing these steps, ensure that the old controller is down-powered and disconnected from the network and the new controller should be fitted in its place.

2.0 Obtain the New Controller's MAC Address

You will need to physically look at the PCB of the new controller. In the lower-right corner you will see a white sticker which has the controller's MAC. Make a note of this new MAC address. The address begins 00-14-34.

3.0 Assign the New MAC Address

  1. From within Borealis, go to Hardware >> Controllers.
  2. Locate the controller that you will be replacing (it should have a current status of offline).
  3. Use the controller's Actions drop-down list and select Edit.

  4. The controller properties will appear.
  5. Locate the MAC address field and enter the MAC address for the new (replacement) controller.

  6. Save the controller settings.

Note: You do not need to enter the new IP address for the replacement controller and that is handled automatically in the next step.

4.0 Scan for the New Controller

When you scan for the new controller the hub will detect what IP address is assigned to the new controller and will add that IP address to the controller properties.
  1. From the main menu, select Hubs.

  2. Use the hub's Actions drop-down menu (located on the right).
  3. Select Scan.
  4. All detected controllers should appear in the list (including the new controller).
  5. The new controller should now show an assigned and the controller's assigned IP address should also be displayed.

  6. Return to the controller's page and the new (replacement) controller should now be online.
