1.0 Introduction
Following is a list of possible scenarios you may encounter when setting up or using the PXL-500 controllers in Borealis. You will then see a possible solution or a list of possible solutions listed in order of the most likely cause:
The Primary PXL Controller is Offline
Ensure the hub is online
From the main menu on the left, click on Hubs and verify the hub is showing as online.
The controllers will show as offline if the hub is offline.
Verify that the controller is connected to the network
If you are able to physically view the controller, ensure the Ethernet cable is connected to the primary controller's LAN-520 module. When the PXL primary controller is connected to the network the LAN-520 module will be displaying one amber LED and two green LEDs, as shown here:
Ensure the JP6 and JP7 jumpers are removed
When using a PXL primary controller in Borealis you must use a LAN-520 module for Ethernet connectivity. To configure the controller for this communication method the JP6 and JP7 jumpers must be removed... they are located near the LAN-520 plug-on module.
Verify that the controller is addressed #1
To configure a controller as a primary controller it must be addressed as #1. The hub communicates to the primary controller and the primary controller communicates to the secondary controllers which are connected via an RS-485 data line.
To find out the controller's programmed address press the white S1 button located beneath the address display. The address number should then display.
Controller Address Change Instructions
- Power-down the controller.
- Remove the jumper from the pins that are labelled JP10.
- Hold down the white S1 button (identified in the image above).
- Apply power while still holding down the S1 button.
- When the current address displays on the screen release S1.
- Press the S1 button to increase the address number.
- Double-press S1 to change the plus sign to minus and you can decrease the address number.
- Double-press S1 again to change the minus sign to plus and you can increase the address number.
- Once the correct address is selected wait for 30 seconds then the new address will be set.
Has the controller been factory reset?
If a new controller is being installed or if it is a controller that was being used on a different system then a factory reset will be required. This will clear any current configuration including the controller PIN (which is used to prevent an unauthorized connection to the controller.
Controller Factory Reset Instructions
- Remove power from the controller.
- Ensure there is a jumper placed across both pins of JP10 (located above the address display).
- Hold down the white S1 button while you apply power to the controller.
Note: if a reader is connected it will beep twice.
- Continue to hold down the S1 button for a minimum of 10 seconds.
- You should hear a relay on the controller momentarily activate.
- The controller is now factory reset.
Note: You do NOT need to remove the jumper from the pins of JP10.
Has the controller been disabled?
If the primary controller has been disabled then it will go offline. Additionally any secondary controllers will also show as offline.
- In Borealis, click on Hardware >> Controllers.

- The Controllers screen will appear.
- Locate the primary controller - it will display an IP address on the right side of the screen and the PXL number will be #1.

- Scroll to the far right of the screen and use the Actions menu to select Edit.

- The controller edit form will appear.
- Verify that the enabled option is checked.
