PXL - Anti-Passback

1.0 Introduction

The Anti Passback (APB) feature provides one-way card access into and out of a secure area. It prevents a cardholder from using their card and then passing that card back to someone else for them to gain unauthorized access.

 

Local APB is supported on PXL controllers and on NXT-MSC controllers. Local APB is applied to a single door or between two doors on the same controller.

 

Note: When using PXL controllers door contacts must be installed. The door contact will register that the door has been physically opened after a valid access grant and the door is required to be opened to correctly set the Anti-passback status for the cardholder. The controller needs to detect a certain series of events for APB to be applied; a valid card read (access granted) followed by Door Opened, then Door Closed. If the controller does not detect the door opening then the card will be able to gain access at the same reader again.

 

 

2.0 APB Amnesty Options

Amnesty resets the APB status for a credential so that same credential same gain access again at any door on the system.

 

Time Amnesty Options Using PXL Controllers

Three APB amnesty options are available:

  • None - No APB amnesty is used
  • Daily - all APB flags are reset at a certain time every day
  • Interval - all APB flags are reset after a specified time interval expires (such as every 15 minutes)

 

 

3.0 Enable APB on the PXL Primary Controller

  1. From the Borealis main menu click Hardware >> Controllers.
  2. Locate the primary controller (there will be a MAC address and an IP address displayed for the controller).
  3. From the Actions drop-down list (located on the right) select Edit.

  4. The controller edit form will appear.
  5. Scroll down the primary controller settings and locate the APB Type option.
  6. Set the APB Type to Hard.
  7. Use the APB Amnesty option to set an APB Amnesty (or leave it set to Off).

  8. Save the controller settings.
  9. The controller network will be updated automatically.

 

 

4.0 Test Anti-Passback

4.1 Test APB With No APB Amnesty

The next steps will explain how to test the APB feature will an enrolled credential. Ensure the credential can gain access at the door you will be setting APB on.

  1. Present the credential at a PXL door on a PXL-500-2-door controller and ensure the credential gains access.
  2. Do not open the door (do not open the door contact input).
  3. Present the same credential again - you will be able to gain access again.
  4. This time open the door (open the door contact input).
  5. Present the same credential a third time - you will now get Access Denied - Anti-passback violation.

4.2 Setup and Test APB With Amnesty - Interval

  1. In the PXL primary controller settings set APB Amnesty to Interval.
  2. Set an APB interval (for example 15 minutes).

  3. Save the controller settings.
  4. Present a valid credential to one of the PXL doors to gain access.
  5. Open and then close the door's door contact input.
  6. Present the same credential again.
  7. In live events you will now get 'Access Denied - Anti-passback violation'.
  8. Wait 15 minutes.

  9. Present the same credential again at the same reader (after 15 minutes has passed).
  10. You will now get Access Granted again.

 

 

4.2 Setup and Test APB With Amnesty - Daily

  1. In the PXL primary controller settings set APB Amnesty to Daily.
  2. Set the time of day that you wish for the APB amnesty to be applied (this will happen every day and the amnesty will be applied to all cardholders).
  3. Save the primary controller settings.

  4. Present a credential to a reader before the APB Amnesty time - and open the door contact input.
  5. Present the same credential again - You will get 'Access Denied - Anti-passback Violation'.
  6. Wait for the time of day when the APB amnesty will be applied.
  7. Present the same credential after the APB amnesty time.
  8. You will then get access granted.
